"Good Dog" gets said a lot... but it doesn't explain much

Calm isn't luck. It's structure, consistency, and someone actually leading the walk

We hear it all the time.

“He’s a good dog really.”

“She’s such a good girl.”

“They’re no trouble at all.”

And most of the time… it’s said with love.

But if we're being honest...

“good dog” doesn’t actually tell you anything useful.

People usually mean something like this:

Calm

Listens

Friendly

Walks nicely

Comes back when called

No drama on walks

Basically… low effort.

And if your dog isn't all of that,

it can start to feel like you’ve done something wrong

Here's where it gets a bit off.

Dogs aren’t born “good” or “bad”.

They’re learning

They're reacting to what's around them

They're coping (or not coping)

So when a dog struggles, it turns into:

“He’s being naughty”

“She’s stubborn”

“He’s just like that”

None of that actually helps.

Try looking at this:

Can they settle?

Do they understand what's expected?

Have they had any consistency?

Because on the flip side, you've got dogs that are:

Overwhelmed

Untaught

Getting completely mixed messages

Same dogs. Just very different guidance,

And this is the bit people don't always love hearing.

Some of the “nicest” dogs we meet…

have no boundaries

can’t cope off lead

struggle around other dogs

But because they’re friendly, it gets brushed off.

Then a dog that needs space, or is still learning, ends up being labelled "difficult"

That’s backwards.

Instead of asking “Is my dog a good dog?”

Ask yourself:

Can my dog stay calm in different environments?

Do they actually understand what’s being asked?

Can they make decent choices when things get distracting?

That’s what really matters.

Because “friendly” without control can turn into unpredictable pretty quickly.

A “good dog” isn’t perfect.

It's not robotic.

It's not endlessly tolerant

A well-supported dog is:

Clear on boundaries

Able to cope

Safe around others

Improving over time

That’s it.

Brave Enough, Or Mad Enough

It’s coming up to Mum’s birthday and three years since she’s been gone.

Grief doesn’t shout the way it does at the beginning. It settles into certain dates. You think you’re fine, and then a birthday approaches and everything feels closer again.

I found myself pulling out her photo albums the other day. She loved taking pictures. Birthdays. Bad haircuts. Ordinary days she must have known were anything but ordinary.

In the photographs she’s still here. Smiling. Holding a baby on one hip. Dad beside her, sleeves rolled up. Six wild-looking children scattered around them.

They’re both gone now.

And it’s a strange thing, reaching an age where the people who built your world aren’t in it anymore. You still feel like their child. There’s just no one left to call you that.

I’m renovating at the moment myself, so I understand now what that kind of stress feels like. The cost. The mess. The jobs that never end. The things that go wrong at the worst time.

Back then, I had no idea what they were carrying.

Six children.

A crumbling old country house called Dromin Lodge.

Land they didn’t fully understand.

Animals they were still learning about.

No safety net.

Looking at those photos now, I don’t see chaos.

I see courage.

When my parents decided we were leaving the city and moving to the middle of nowhere, I don’t think any of us truly understood what that meant. They had no farming background. No grand plan. Just a belief that if you worked hard enough, you’d figure it out.

So off we went.

I remember seeing the house for the first time, it looked huge compared to our terrace in the city. Not grand. Just big. Worn. Weather-beaten.

Inside, everything echoed. The windows rattled when the wind picked up.

And it was quiet.

It was exciting.

Then there was the mud.

Proper Irish countryside mud. The thick, swallow-your-wellies kind. You didn’t walk through it. You negotiated with it. It was tiring work.

Then the animals arrived.

First hens.

Then cows and calves.

Geese with no respect for personal space.

Goats.

Horses.

Cats. More cats.

Dogs.

And somewhere in the middle of all that, my little brother arrived too.

There was no gentle settling-in period. Animals don’t wait. Babies don’t wait either. Things needed feeding. Things needed cleaning. Things needed fixing.

All of it happening at once.

In summer, when the hay had to be made, the neighbours would appear.

We didn’t have the machinery you see now. Or maybe it existed somewhere, just not for us. For us it was a trailer, forks, sweat, and a race against the weather.

Getting the bales onto the back of the trailer felt like a breaking mission. You lifted. Passed. Stacked. Again and again. Your arms burned. Your back ached.

And the neighbours helped.
Turning up because that’s what you did. If your hay needed lifting, people came. If theirs needed lifting, you went.

We didn’t pop out for milk.

We milked cows. And goats.

We learned something early. Food didn’t just appear.

Someone worked for it. Planting spuds sounds lovely when you say it quickly.

It isn’t.

Long rows. Bent backs. Cold fingers. Rain that doesn’t care how old you are or how tired you feel. Picking them later wasn’t any easier. Lifting. Carrying. Sorting.

We moaned.

But we did it.

As the years went on, the farm changed. And so did I.

I wasn’t the wide-eyed child anymore. I was a teenager. Which meant opinions. Independence. And occasionally very bad timing.

There were nights I’d come home too late.

The house would be pitch dark. That heavy country quiet. I’d creep up with small pebbles in my hand, aiming carefully at my sister’s bedroom window.

Tap.

Pause.

Tap again.

Sometimes it worked.

Sometimes it didn’t.

And on the nights she didn’t wake up, I’d make my way down to the hay barn. My bed for the evening.

It wasn’t the soft golden dream people imagine. It was itchy. It got in your hair, your clothes, your mouth. It smelled sweet and dusty and slightly damp all at once.

But it was warm.

Looking back now, through Mum’s photographs, I see things differently.

I see Mum smiling at the camera when she must have been shattered.

I see children who thought it was all normal.

Because they made it feel normal.

That’s what I understand now.

They didn’t wait until they felt ready.

They didn’t wait for guarantees.

They just chose the life and worked for it.

Dromin Lodge wasn’t perfect.

It was cold. Chaotic. Relentless at times.

But it shaped us.

At the time, it felt like we’d moved to the edge of the world.

Now I see it differently.

We weren’t lost in the middle of nowhere.

We were right in the middle of the making of us.

The Time I Skipped School, Tried to Save a Dog & Nearly Died Of Financial Panic

It’s National Random Acts of Kindness Day.

Which reminded me of the time I very nearly ruined my life over a Jack Russell.

I was meant to be at school.

Instead, me and a couple of my friends decided we’d head to the next town and hang about in the park. As you do when you’re fourteen and thick.

On the way, a car ran over this tiny little Jack Russell.

Now most people would think, “Right, careful now.”

Not me.

I went charging in like a dramatic extra from Casualty.

My only thought was, “I’ll grab him and make sure he’s ok.”

His only thought was, “Absolutely not, you lunatic.”

He turned and bit me straight on the hand.

And I reacted like I’d been taken out by a sniper.

Fell backwards into the middle of the road. Full dramatic collapse. Rolling about. Swearing at a dog I had just tried to rescue.

It was less hero and more village idiot.

A couple stopped the car and came running over.

The woman looked at me on the ground and said, “Will you cop yourself on.”

Not unkind. Just factual.

Which, if you’re not Irish, means: stop the theatrics immediately.

They pulled me up, and drove me to the doctor.

Now here’s the real trauma.

In Ireland, you pay to see the doctor.

Twenty pounds it was.

Twenty!

At fourteen, that might as well have been a mortgage.

Then the doctor says I need an injection.

An injection!

All I could think was, “Well that's it, I'm screwed". That’s at least another twenty. I’m finished. I was terrified the bill would go home and my parents would discover I didn't go to double maths.

I wasn’t worried about the bite.

I was worried about the invoice.

The doctors were lovely. Didn’t ask too many questions. Patched me up. Gave me the jab.

And somehow, to this day, I don’t know how, my parents never found out.

That couple didn’t have to stop.

The doctor didn’t have to be sound about it.

No one had to quietly let the whole thing slide.

But they did.

That’s the kind of kindness that sticks.

People stepping in when a dramatic Irish teenager makes poor decisions before lunchtime.

Looking back, it’s actually not that surprising I now work with dogs.

The instinct to help was always there.

What I've learned since is this: A frightened dog doesn't need a hero. They need calm. The need space. They need someone who can think clearly when they can't.

I’ve learned to approach Jack Russells a little more sensibly.

And to stay out of the middle of the road.

How emotional intelligence shapes the way I work with dogs and people

This way of working matters most for dogs who are sensitive, easily overstimulated, or don't thrive in busy group walks.

I've never been the most academic person, and I’m comfortable admitting that. Exams, heavy theory, and trying to sound clever have never really been my thing. For a long time, I assumed that meant I was missing something important.

It took me a while to realise I wasn’t missing it. I was just wired differently.

I have always been good at reading a room.

I notice atmosphere quickly. When something feels unsettled, tense, or slightly off, even if everything looks fine on the surface. I pick up on body language, pacing, tone, and energy without consciously trying to. I don't sit there analysing it. I just feel it, and I adjust.

For years, I thought that made me overly sensitive. Too affected by what was going on around me. Now I see it as awareness. And once I stopped fighting it, it became one of my biggest strengths.

Dogs communicate in ways that aren’t always obvious. Through posture, movement, breathing, and small changes in behaviour that are easy to miss if you're only looking for the big stuff. They tell you how they’re coping long before anything turns into a “problem”.

Most of the time, it's subtle.

I can usually sense within minutes whether a dog is settled or just getting through things. Whether they’re excited or actually overstimulated. Whether something small is quietly building that needs attention rather than pressure.

I don’t wait for things to escalate before I respond.

This way of working feeds directly into our Structured walks , which are led by Lauren and designed for dogs who need calm, consistency, and support in real -world walking situations.

Most of the time, that response looks like doing less. Slowing the walk. Creating more space. Saying fewer words. Letting things settle instead of pushing for progress.

The same awareness applies to people. Owners often share more through hesitation, or tone. I can usually tell when someone is trying their best but feels unsure, overwhelmed, or quietly worried they’re doing something wrong.

That shapes how I work. I slow things down when needed. I remove pressure where I can.

Emotional intelligence, to me, isn’t about being the cleverest person in the room. It’s about paying attention. About noticing how situations feel and responding with care and calm.

I’ve learned that rushing usually makes thing harder. Overstimulation creates stress. And forcing progress often sets things back. Calm, consistency, and small adjustments usually get better results in the long run.

I’ve also come to understand why calm matters so much to me personally. Loud, chaotic environments drain me. Constant pressure and reactivity don’t bring out my best. I don’t see that as a weakness anymore. I see it as information that helps me make better decisions.

The world feels more rushed and less patient than it used to. I notice that shift, and I try not to add to it. I value listening over being right, understanding over certainty, and creating space rather than filling it.

I may not be the most academic person in the room, but I can read the room. I can sense when something needs slowing down, when pressure needs lifting, and when quiet support matters more than clever answers.

That ability has shaped how I work and how I show up.

It took time, and I still have to remind myself sometimes, but I've learned to trust it.

You Could Be Putting Your Dog at Risk Every Day Without Realising it

A simple timing mistake that can lead to avoidable health problems

If you feed your dog just before a walk, or straight after one, this is for you.

These are two of the most common mistakes I see as a dog walker. Not because owners don’t care, but because nobody ever told them it matters.

It does.

This isn’t about being dramatic or overcautious. It’s about understanding how a dog’s body works and avoiding problems that are completely preventable.

Why feeding and walking too close together causes problems

When a dog eats, their body switches into digestion mode. Blood flow is directed to the stomach and intestines so food can be processed properly.

If you then take that dog out for a walk, or feed them immediately after they get back, you’re asking their body to juggle digestion and activity at the same time. Add excitement, pulling on the lead, or play, and that strain increases.

Common issues linked to poor feeding timing include:

• Nausea

• Vomiting

• Loose stools

• Excessive panting

• General discomfort

In larger or deep-chested dogs, there’s also the risk of bloat (GDV) . This is a serious medical emergency where the stomach fills with gas and can twist. When it happens, it can escalate very quickly.

Signs of GDV (Bloat) in Dogs You Should Never Ignore

GDV rarely starts with dramatic collapse. It often starts quietly, which is why it’s missed.

Early signs can include:

• Restlessness or pacing

• Repeated attempts to vomit or retch with nothing coming up

• Excessive drooling or foamy saliva

• A tight or swollen-looking abdomen

• Whining, lip licking, or repeatedly looking at their stomach

• Sudden anxiety or inability to settle

As it progresses, symptoms can escalate to:

• A visibly distended, drum-tight stomach

• Rapid breathing or panting

• Pale gums

• Weakness or collapse

• Signs of pain when touched

If you ever see these signs, it is an emergency. GDV will not resolve on its own, and waiting can cost valuable time.

Dogs that are considered higher risk

Bloat (GDV) is most commonly seen in large, deep-chested breeds . Chest shape matters more than weight.

Breeds most often associated with bloat include:

• Great Danes

• German Shepherds

• Dobermans

• Standard Poodles

• Weimaraners

• Irish Setters

• Gordon Setters

• Boxers

• Akitas

• Bloodhounds

• Greyhounds and other sighthounds

Even dogs that aren’t considered “high risk” don’t benefit from feeding and exercising back-to-back. It’s unnecessary stress on the body.

How long should you wait after feeding before a walk?

People want a clear answer, so here it is.

• After a small meal: wait at least 1 hour

• After a full meal: wait 1.5 to 2 hours

If your dog is large, deep-chested, older, prone to digestive issues, or gets very excited on walks, longer is safer.

High arousal, pulling, spinning, and rough play all increase pressure inside the abdomen. That’s not something you want happening while food is being digested.

Why feeding straight after a walk isn’t ideal

After a walk, especially one that’s stimulating, your dog’s heart rate and adrenaline levels are still elevated. They’re warm, excited, and often over-aroused.

Feeding immediately can lead to:

• Gulping food too quickly

• Digestive upset

• Increased bloat risk in susceptible dogs

A short wind-down makes a big difference.

What actually works best in real life

This routine keeps things simple and avoids unnecessary strain on your dog’s body:

• After feeding:

Wait at least 1 to 2 hours before any walk, depending on the size of the meal and your dog’s individual needs.

• After a walk:

Allow at least 3 0 minutes of calm time before feeding. This gives your dog time to cool down, settle, and return to normal breathing.

During that post-walk wind-down, offer small amounts of water and let your dog relax. Once they’re calm, then feed.

Digestion needs calm. So does recovery.

“My dog’s always been fine”

Maybe. And hopefully they stay that way.

But many dogs cope with poor routines for years before something goes wrong. That doesn’t make the routine safe. It just means the dog has been lucky.

Good care isn’t about luck. It’s about reducing risk where you can.

Life became shaped round routine.

And then suddenly, that routine is gone.

The walks stop.

And the world carries on as if nothing huge has just happened.

Walking wasn’t just exercise.

It was familiar faces, nods of recognition, the same people at the same times, short chats that mattered more than you realised.

Because someone needs to tell the truth about this 'relaxing' job

People think dog walking is peaceful.

“Must be so relaxing,” they say.

“Just you and the dogs,” they say.

“How easy, just walking around fields,” they say.

Well, let me tell you what it’s really like.

Strap in.

1. I talk to dogs like they’re my colleagues, and honestly, they’re more reasonable.

“Right lads, let’s get ourselves together.”

“Please don’t be weird today.”

“I’m one latte away from giving up, don’t test me.”

Dogs nod along.

Humans nearby slowly increase their walking speed.

2. A split poo bag once exploded on me. (Ok, maybe more than once)

Nothing says “I love my job” like wearing someone else’s cold, squishy regrets on your sleeve.

And leg.

And soul.

Standing in a field whispering,

“Don’t swear. You’re a professional.”

3. I’ve been dragged from my own van by a Labrador.

Labs don’t exit vehicles.

They detonate from them.

Professionalism goes straight out the window as I get dragged down the road like a ragdoll on speed.

4. I have fallen in the mud. More than once? Maybe.

Always after saying something like:

“It’s not that muddy today.”

The dogs stare at me like,

“Well. We weren’t expecting that, but alright,”

as they dive in for face licks.

5. Every dog has a nickname and none of them would hold up in court.

6. I sing narrations of whatever chaos is happening, loudly, and without warning.

Some people hum quietly.

I, apparently, sing my way through disasters like a deranged Disney princess.

It’s always something deeply unglamorous like:

�� “Don't step on the poo poo?”

�� “Oh dear God, what are you eating now?”

�� “No no no no NO don’t roll in thaaaat!”

I don’t even realise I’m doing it until another walker appears out of nowhere and I have to pretend I was definitely talking to the dogs.

The dogs, by the way, look just as mortified as I am.

7. I pretend I meant to jog when I’m actually being dragged.

A dog pulls → I involuntarily sprint → a stranger appears → now I must act like I’m “just keeping fit.”

Absolutely not.

I haven’t voluntarily run since 2017.

8. I can predict a poo like a fortune teller. I know the dog needs a poo before he does.

The sniff.

The spin.

The faraway look.

I could charge money for this gift.

9. I congratulate poos that should genuinely be studied by scientists.

“GOOD BOY!” or “Jesus, what did you have for dinner last night?”

I say, enthusiastically, whilst my soul leaves my body through my nostrils.

10. I’ve yelled things in public no sane person should ever say.

“WILL YA STOP LICKING HIS WILLY!!”

“SHEEP ARE NOT YOUR ENEMY!!”

“IF YOU EAT THAT I’M MOVING TO SPAIN!”

“DON’T YOU EVEN THINK ABOUT ROLLING IN THAT!”

11. Some days the dogs are better behaved than the humans I meet.

And I stand by this wholeheartedly, without a shred of sarcasm.

12. I regularly convince myself I'm single handedly ruining the universe if I'm running late.

There's nothing like sitting in traffic, gripping the steering wheel, whispering,

"THIS IS IT. THIS IS HOW I DIE."

My brain:

"You're five minutes behind schedule."

My nervous system:

"WE ARE DOOMED. THE WORLD IS ENDING."

13. I dry dogs in the rain.

There's nothing quite like trying to dry a dog when it's absolutely pissing it down. I don't even need to explain this one

In Summary

Dog walking is in fact...

Muddy.

Messy.

Ridiculous.

Traumatising.

Frequently hilarious.

And honestly?

I wouldn’t trade it for anything because for every fall, every explosion of poo, every spontaneous musical number, there’s a quiet moment of trust, and the kind of joy that makes the madness worth it.

And yes…

Fireworks, Furry Friends, and a Bit of Common Sense

(Because it’s that time of year again…)

Every year, as soon as the first pack of fireworks lands in the shops, you can almost hear the country split in two.

On one side: the “Oh here we go again, stop moaning, it’s only a few bangs!” crowd.

On the other: pet owners quietly dreading the next few weeks of shaking, panting, hiding, drooling, and that’s just us trying to calm the dogs down.

This isn’t about being miserable or anti-fun. It’s about awareness. Because whilst fireworks might look lovely to us, they can be absolutely terrifying for the animals that share our world, not just dogs, but cats, horses, rabbits, birds, and all the local wildlife trying to mind their own business in the dark.

What Fireworks Actually Do to Animals

We know what fireworks are. Our pets don’t.

To them, it’s not Bonfire Night, it’s “the sky is exploding and we’re all about to die” night.

Dogs shake, cats vanish under beds, horses bolt, rabbits freeze. Birds even abandon their nests in panic. It’s chaos for them, and sadly, sometimes it ends in injury or worse.

Desensitising Your Dog (or at Least Making Things a Bit Easier This Week)

Ideally, desensitising starts weeks or even months before fireworks season, it’s about teaching your dog that those scary bangs aren’t actually a threat.

But since we’ve only got a few days (and let’s be honest, most of us are only just thinking about it now), here’s what you can do to help your dog feel a bit more comfortable this week:

• Keep the Calm Vibes Going:

Stick to your usual routine and avoid adding extra stress. The calmer you are, the calmer your dog will feel.

• Turn Up the Background Noise:

Pop the telly or radio on to soften the bangs. It’s not high-tech, but it works.

• Create a Safe Space:

A cosy den with blankets, toys, and something that smells like you can work wonders when things kick off outside.

• Stay Positive:

If your dog hears fireworks but doesn’t panic, reward that calm with a bit of fuss or a treat, you’re quietly building confidence for next time.

• Think Long-Term:

When the chaos is over, that’s the time to start proper desensitisation for next year. Slow and steady is key.

If you want to make next firework season easier, start once life’s gone quiet again. Desensitisation works best when the world’s calm, not when the sky’s exploding.

Here’s how to do it right:

• Start Early:

Play low-volume firework sounds from YouTube or Spotify during calm times, when you’re cooking, watching telly, or pottering about. Keep it relaxed and no big deal.

• Go Slow:

If your dog’s chilled, gradually nudge the volume up over a few weeks. If they get uneasy, drop it back down. Patience beats pressure every time.

• Make It Positive:

Hey lovely lot! Consider this your official follow-up after our recent video with me, Lauren, and the star of the show, Vicky. Now, bless her, Vicky got thrown straight into the limelight and whilst Lauren and I can't resist of bit of camera time, Vicky's been braving the spotlight like a champ. she’s warming up fast to our silly antics, and we couldn't be prouder.

Now, let's be clear - we didn't just pluck any old person to join Muddy Paws Adventures. We took our time. We wanted someone who shared our ethos: it’s not just about walking dogs, it’s about making sure they’re safe, happy, and their needs always come first. And Vicky? Well, she’s the perfect fit.

So who is Vicky? She’s a lifelong dog lover who grew up with dogs always at her side (see above picture of her lovely lurcher), and now she shares her life with her own gorgeous lab, Oscar. She's also mum to teenage daughter, Lucy. She's a nurse by trade, and that shows just how caring she is. We’ve already had plenty of laughs, and we know she’s going to fit right into our slightly bonkers, girl-powered crew.

And because she's all about learning, she's even signed herself up for a canine first aid course at the Neston Community Centre on the 26th October through Dog First Aid Cheshire. National Encouragement Day – A Little Wag of Support ��

Today is National Encouragement Day – a whole day dedicated to cheering each other on. And honestly, who does encouragement better than dogs? They don’t care if you’ve had a bad hair day, or days in my case, if you've got toothpaste down your top. . To them, you’re brilliant, full stop.

I reckon we can learn a lot from that.

A Wobbly Start

When I first set up Muddy Paws Adventures , I thought it would be simple: grab the leads, head out with the dogs, enjoy the fresh air. Easy, right?

Well… not quite.

Behind the scenes, there was a fair bit of wobbling. I remember one particularly grim Tuesday – grey skies, rain coming in sideways, me trudging home with mud up to my knees and only one new client. I honestly thought, what am I doing? Maybe I’d been daft to even try.

That night, a friend messaged. Just a quick, “You have a deep connection with dogs. People will see it – keep going.”

It wasn’t a long pep talk, but it gave me the nudge I needed. The very next day, I got a booking. One became two, two became four… and now here we are, knee-deep in muddy paw prints, with a business that makes my heart full (and my washing machine work overtime).

How Tucker Came Into Our Lives

I n 2020, a bedraggled patterdale arrived on our doorstop from a local rescue!

We had talked about rehoming a dog for a long time, and both me & Tom had owned dogs previously, so we thought we knew what we were getting ourselves into…oh how wrong we were!! ��

It didn’t take long for us to realise that Tucker had multiple behavioural issues. One of the main issues, and something which we still manage to date is his reactivity. When he arrived, he was

reactive to dogs, cats, blown over fences, wheelie bins, loud noises, hay bales, piles of logs, the list goes on…

He had some issues with resource guarding- mainly toys or food.

He struggled with aggression towards overhandling, grooming, vet visits or if a stranger over fusses him.

He also had some of the basic issues- lead pulling, no obedience training and no recall training.

We had our work cut out!

Tackling Reactivity and Behavioural Challenges

I dove head first into learning as much as I could about reactivity and how to overcome his big feelings! I learnt training methods to work on developing our relationship, trust, obedience and confidence.

It wasn’t easy, there were times I felt like giving up, but that wasn’t an option- once a dog enters our home, we won’t let them down. Through hard wor k, patience, time, tears and laughter, we managed to overcome all of his reactivity concerns and resource guarding. We also worked hard on his obedience training.

Now, he sometimes helps me as a "stooge dog" for introducing new dogs to groups or to ‘suss out’ the newbies.

We still manage his aggression at the vets & grooming appointments, but we have come a long way from how he behaved when he first arrived!

Lessons Learned From Training Tucker

My advice for those who are struggling with reactivity is

You are not alone! There are so many people going through this journey with their dogs. I understand how isolating it can be, and reaching out to others who were in a similar boat really helped me.
Seek advice from a reputable trainer, someone you know, that you trust and who will work with you to understand your dog and their individual needs.
Finally, laugh where you can- I can’t tell you how many times Tucker has ‘kicked off’ in a cafe or in a public place when we were practicing socialisation! Me and Tom would share a glance and a smirk ‘oh here we go again’ �� and don’t care about what other people think! If you know that you are doing the right thing for your dog and following the appropriate training programme, then who cares what other people think! You will be the one laughing at the end.

Tucker has been my greatest teacher, and although he hasn’t been the easiest dog in the world, I have learnt so much from him, and he is my main motivation and inspiration to continue to pursue a career in balanced dog training.

Every dog deserves a chance, and with the right trainer behind you, every dog can live a full life alongside their human!

I am currently studying with the British college of canine studies to complete a diploma in Advanced Canine Behaviour, and working alongside a dog trainer to further develop my ‘hands on’ experience.

Ah, Neston. A small town with a big heart, friendly faces, and, if you spend as much time outdoors as I do, more muddy paw prints than you’d think possible. Living here, and offering dog walking in Neston , I know we’re very lucky. With beautiful local walks and hidden trails tucked away, I’m still discovering new paths even now. People often ask me what it’s really like being a dog walker in Neston. Truth? It’s a mix of chaos, comedy, and those heart-melting moments that make you stop and think, yep, this is the best job in the world.

Morning Madness

My day usually kicks off around 7.30 a.m., which feels far too early for someone who loves her bed. First job is checking the day’s schedule and loading up the essentials: leads, water, treats, poo bags, towels (for the divas who refuse to step out in drizzle—yes, Hetty, I’m looking at you).

Every dog has their quirks; some are polite as can be, others… let’s just say they’re very much convinced they run the show. And then there are the usual characters: the zoomers who race around like little speed demons or demons on speed!, and the independent types who are perfectly happy plodding along at their own pace, as long as no one interferes.

Rain and mud? Always a given, although we have been lucky this summer with the weather. Glamour? Long gone. By midday, my hair’s a state (hence why it’s always tied up), and there’s probably something unmentionable under my fingernails. But watching the dogs tear across the fields, ears flying, without a single worry in the world? Worth it all.

Juggling personalities is all part of it too. The excitable ones can’t be allowed to bowl over the gentle souls, and the oldies deserve their steady potter instead of a sprint. Most days I feel like a referee, teacher, and therapist all rolled into one.

Afternoon Wind-Down

By the afternoon, it’s drop-offs and updates. Owners get little gems like, “Seamus rolled in something again,” or “Winnie discovered the tiniest puddle and made it her personal spa.” Leads get rinsed, towels put in washing machine, and I finally sneak a well-earned brew whilst I add the action shots to our socials.

As a dog walker and lifelong dog lover, I spend a lot of time thinking about how our everyday choices impact our four-legged companions. As a HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) user, I learned there’s more to it than managing symptoms and navigating the ups and downs of hormones.

What many people don’t realise is that some forms of HRT, especially gels and creams, can pose a risk to dogs .

The Hidden Risk: Hormone Transfer

Transdermal HRT (applied to the skin) is a common and convenient option for many going through menopause or gender-affirming treatment. But if not used carefully, the hormones can transfer to surfaces, fabrics — and even directly to your pets.

Dogs can absorb these hormones through their skin or by licking contaminated areas. And even small amounts can cause health problems , such as:

In Females:

Uterine infection
Enlarged vulva
Bloody discharge from the vulva

In males:

Inflamed penis
Small testes and/or undescended testicle in dogs 6+months
Shrunken penis

In both Sexes:

Enlarged mammary glands (in both male and female dogs)
Increased interest from other dogs and/or attraction towards others
Inappropriate indoor urination
Vomiting and or diarrhoea
Decreased appetite
B ehavioural changes
Fur loss or skin irritation

Real Talk: This Caught Me Off Guard

I’m not writing this as a warning from a vet textbook — I’m writing this as someone who didn’t know the risks until I started HRT myself. Like many others, I applied my gel in the morning, got dressed. No second thought. But hormone residue can stay on the skin, soak into clothing, and transfer to anything you touch — including leads, seats, and yes, your dogs. Especially worrying when you think about how often they lean against us, snuggle on laps, or give us a cheeky lick.

The more I read, the more I realised: this is something we need to talk about in the dog-owning community.

My Solution: A Simple Change

After learning more, I decided to change when I apply my HRT. Now I spray in the evening, before bed when I'm not coming into contact with dogs or equipment straight after. It's such a small shift, but it gives me peace of mind - especially with the number of lovely dogs I spend time with every day.

What You Can Do to Keep Your Dogs Safe

If you’re using HRT and have dogs at home — or walk dogs for a living like I do — here are a few simple steps to reduce the risk:

• Apply the gel or cream to areas dogs can’t lick or touch

• Wash your hands thoroughly after applying.

• Let the gel fully dry before getting dressed and avoid letting dogs sit on your lap or lick your skin for at least an hour.

• Wear long sleeves or trousers to cover treated areas when handling dogs.

• Wash any clothing that may have come into contact with the product before re-wearing.

• Speak to your vet if your dog is showing unusual symptoms — and mention HRT as a possible factor.

It’s Not About Shame — It’s About Awareness

This post isn’t here to scare anyone. HRT has been a lifeline for me, and for many others. But just like we keep chocolate, grapes, and paracetamol out of paws’ reach — we need to be just as careful with our own medications.

Dogs are curious, affectionate, and always nearby — which is one of the best things about them. It also means we owe it to them to be aware of what we’re bringing into their space.

From Farm Girl to Dog Walker: A Life with Animals

I’ve always felt most at home in the company of animals. Growing up on a small farm in the southwest of Ireland, they were my whole world. Hens clucked around my feet, the cats lounging in the sum as if they owned the place, cows mooed impatiently for their feed, and the dogs were my ever-loyal companions. I spent most of my childhood knee-deep in mud, hay in my hair, and usually chatting away to the horses as if they could understand every word. (To this day, I swear we had a telepathic connection.)

My happiest moments were in the stables, surrounded by the soft sounds of horses munching on hay, the occasional snort, and the warmth of their breath on my hands. The animals were my best friends—well, most of them. The geese, on the other hand, were the absolute bane of my existence. Evil little creatures with beady eyes and bad attitudes! One day, they trapped me at the far end of the paddock, honking like demons while I screamed for anyone to come help me. I’ll never forget the terror.

Mornings on the farm were magical. I’d wake up early to check if the hens had laid any eggs, carefully collecting them like precious treasures. Then it was off to milk the cow, I’d carry a jug of fresh milk into the kitchen, placing it on the table.

Farm life wasn’t just about the fun bits, though. There were spuds to plant where we had to prepare the soil, and later, backbreaking hours spent digging them up. Making bales of hay and stacking them in the barn was a full-body workout before I even knew what a workout was. It was hard graft, but I loved it. There was something deeply satisfying about working alongside nature, feeling the earth beneath my hands, and knowing that everything had a purpose.

Then, at 18, life took a turn—I moved to the city.

To say it was a shock would be putting it mildly. The fields and open spaces were replaced with concrete and traffic. No morning egg collection, no cows waiting to be milked, and worst of all—no animals to talk to. I tried to adjust, but I always felt like something was missing. Eventually, I moved to the UK, working in London for a few years before settling in the north of England in 2003. Life moved on—marriage, three kids, and a job that did nothing for my soul.

Then came the moment I couldn’t ignore any longer.

My dad was diagnosed with lung cancer, and everything shifted. Watching him go through that battle, seeing how fragile life really is, made me rethink everything. It put things into perspective in a way nothing else could. Working a 9 to 5 job, counting down the hours, felt like an insult to the time we’re given. I knew I needed a change—something that made me feel again. And that’s when it hit me. Animals. Dogs. The one thing that had always brought me joy.

So, I took the leap into dog walking.

Some days are tough. Walking for hours in sideways rain, mud creeping into places mud shouldn’t be, and watching a dog roll gleefully in something foul just as I’m about to hand them back to their owner. And, honestly, they’re the best part of mine.

When I’m out there, surrounded by dogs, feeling the wind in my face and the earth beneath my feet, I’m that little girl on the farm all over again. The happiness I felt back then, knee-high in mud, surrounded by animals, is the same happiness I feel now. Because at the end of the day, it’s simple—I was always meant to be with animals.

Running Muddy Paws Adventures has always been non-stop fun, but let’s be honest—it’s also a full-body workout. Trying to keep up with a pack of zooming, mud-loving, ball-chasing dogs on my own has definitely had its moments! So, I’m thrilled to say I now have a partner-in-crime—Lauren has officially joined the team! Well, she actually joined nearly a year ago!

Lauren has jumped straight into the chaos with energy, patience, and a brilliant sense of humour. She’s realised that clean clothes stay clean for approximately three seconds in this job!

The dogs love her, I love having her on board, and walks have become even more fun. It’s great having someone to share the adventures, the laughs, and the occasional “why is he rolling in that?!” moment.

So, here’s to Lauren—our newest Muddy Paws team member! We can’t wait for more fun, more muddy footprints, and plenty more unforgettable adventures ahead.

When you have to say goodbye..

As a dog walker, I thought it was a good idea to do a pet bereavement course a few months back. I did it thinking I wouldn't have to use or deal with that side of things for a long time. Unfortunately, I was wrong. Over the last few weeks two of our valued Muddy Paws Adventures family members have gone over the rainbow bridge. To say it was a shock is an understatement. I am absolutely devastated that Fergus and Laddie are no longer with us and miss them both terribly. We have had so many good times and I will always cherish those memories. Did the pet bereavement course help? Honestly? No, no it didn't but only because I'm too emotionally involved with the dogs in my care. I crumbled and cried with the families, I felt their pain, I felt their loss, I felt their turmoil in the decision they were faced with.

My heart goes out to Fergus and Laddie's families. I know they are heartbroken to lose their beloved pets. My thoughts are always with them.

Always Learning

I've been a busy bee over the past few months. Not only have I been working my ass off (literally) I've also been taking courses to expand my knowledge on all things dog. I find it so interesting, it's made me look at things in a different way. I definitely have more of an understanding on how dogs communicate, which is very important. I find the whole thing just fascinating. Will I take it further and become a trainer? Who knows? For now I'm just concentrating on being the best that I can be for the dogs in my care. To be able to listen to them and understand what they're trying to tell us.

It was so worth the wait

Stay calm, stay focused and know that it'll all be worth it in the end...

I met Jess and Jake at the end of February. Jess had to be muzzled and kept on a short lead when I would visit the home. She would bark and lunge at me, she would stare me out. She made it very clear she didn’t want me around. I a lways had to remain calm, I didn’t talk to her, I didn’t make eye contact. I would just carry on the conversation with her owners and act like she wasn’t even there.

It was arranged that I visit the home twice weekly, to get Jess used to me. It took patience and consistency. Jess, Jake, their owners and I would go for walks, spend time in the kitchen, the garden, the front room. I was letting myself into the home, calling out “Hi, it’s only me” the Irish accent standing out a mile! Jess was finally getting used to my presence. She would hear me before she saw me. We took it slow, we took it at her pace. The lead was loosened, then removed. Result! she didn’t lunge. Next, the muzzle was taken off.

Fast forward to today and I am absolutely delighted to say that Jess doesn’t need a muzzle when around me, although she does need a muzzle when she’s out and about, she doesn’t need to be put on a short lead, she doesn’t bark at me, she doesn’t stare at me, she doesn’t lunge at me. In fact, she comes running to me for rubs and treats! This is what it’s all about… this is why I love what I do and why I love animals. It actually makes me quite emotional! It’s the best feeling in the world.

"What exactly is it that you do?"

I bumped into a friend that I hadn't seen for ages. We talked about Muddy Paws Adventures and she asked the question "what is it that you do?" I was able to tell her about how I spend my days. I get to walk, run, play, fall over in mud, get wet, throw balls, explore, teach, learn, chat, cuddle and just have loads of fun with the dogs that I walk. I decided to make a little video to show snippets of how happy our days are. We get to go on some pretty awesome adventures. I know the dogs love it too...check it out for yourself....

There's no stopping us now...

Muddy Paws Adventures started as an idea in my head, to now see it in person is incredible. I am chuffed to bits with the signage on our new van. A BIG shout out to Signs2Go in Tranmere, you did a great job at putting up with me changing my mind every two minutes! I have made a little video of the inside of the van where you will get to see how the dogs are transported. It's great peace of mind knowing that not only is your pooch being transported safely, they're also travelling in comfort. Don't forget to give us a wave if you see us out and about ��

The Wirral

My second favourite place in the world

So obviously my first favourite place is my Homeland, Ireland, but closely followed by the Wirral. I am so lucky to live in such a wonderful part of the world. And even more lucky if you're a dog owner. I made a video last week of myself when I found yet another trail I didn't know anything about. Like, Hello?? why didn't anyone tell me about the beautiful trail at Thornton Hough? I've only lived here seventeen years! I went on a lovely adventure that day with the little Tedster and my main man Murph.

We were very lucky to have such great weather during the month of October. I got to go to the beach with the lovely Dexter (see cute picture of the little fella) I must admit, I struggled running on the sand. I felt very old and sluggish, felt every bit of my forty five years. Dexter, on the other hand, was having a great time and was completely oblivious to my gasps for air.

I was lucky enough to take two new dogs to Thurstaston Common, followed by Royden Park. Fergus and Seamus, loving the Irish names, had a great time exploring the woods. We were all tired when we got back to the van. It's a beautiful walk and one of my favourites. Definitely check it out if you're ever in the area.

I'm sure there are loads of other places that I've yet to explore and this is why I really have the best job in the world. I get to explore this wonderful countryside with dogs! How lucky am I?

Putting a face to the name and seeing where it all began

I am truly blessed to have had a great childhood. We always had a dog growing up. My parents moved to the country when I was seven years old. Living on a farm was brilliant muddy fun, especially when you love animals as much as I do. I would spend most of my time talking and petting the horses, the cows, the dog, the cats, the geese, when they weren't chasing me around the field, the hens, the goats and anything else that would listen. I found petting the animals so therapeutic and calming, and for them too. It's where my love for animals grew.

Fast forward to my forties, where has the time gone? I got my gorgeous Cocker, Murphy (see above picture) He can be a pain in the rear end sometimes but I can't imagine my life without him. He is my little buddy. He has made me realise that I still have the passion for the outdoors and being around animals. It's how Muddy Paws Adventures came about.

I have made a little video, which took me longer than I'd like to admit. Have a little gander at it, you'll get to see me as a little girl, working hard on the farm.

The highs and lows of setting up a small business

Hi, I'm Olivia from Muddy Paws Adventures. Welcome to my very first blog. Now, I know it's probably not the best idea to start your very first blog with something negative, but here goes. I am going to start with the lows, then we can move onto the beautiful, soul lifting, angel singing highs....

It's been a busy week for us at Muddy Paws Adventures. I've seen more of my laptop then I have my lovely patient partner, trying to figure out how Google Ads work, Facebook Ads work and everything else in-between. I have to say it's not something I have enjoyed, but only because I haven't a Scooby Doo what I'm doing! It's all trial and error.... and lots of errors! I have spent far too much money on products I don't even want or need. It's a steep learning curve, that's for sure. And don't get me started on my laptop, it is forever crashing half way through my work. I guess I know what I'll be wanting for Christmas! Ok, so that's the deep, dark lows out of the way.

On a brighter note, we have spent our weekend posting flyers around Neston. I was happy to see people in their gardens, it gave me a chance to say hello and tell them a little bit about me and Muddy Pa ws Adventures. It was lovely to speak to so many friendly people. Oh, and I got to meet some of their dogs and get cuddles too! I was thrilled to learn that local businesses were happy to take some of my flyers and business cards to put in their shop. I am very grateful to them for their support. Keep an eye out for us over the next few weeks as we continue to distribute flyers. Come out and say hello! We're a friendly bunch.
