Confidence Can't Be Carried: Why Picking Up Your Dog Holds Them Back

Olivia • 3 October 2025

Because your dog deserves to stand on their own four paws

Not every dog is ready to dive straight into group dog walks, and that’s absolutely fine. Some love it from day one, others need a slower, more thoughtful approach. And here’s the thing: we see you, the nervous owner, worrying that your little whirlwind might bark the place down or that your rescue dog might not cope. We get it. But here’s the truth…

๐Ÿ“Œ Scooping your dog up the second they bark doesn’t build confidence — it chips away at it.

We know it feels protective, but to your dog it just confirms: “I was right, that other dog is scary — Mum/Dad rescued me!” Every time they’re lifted away, they never get the chance to learn that actually, standing on their own four paws is perfectly safe.

That’s why we offer solo dog walks in Neston and the surrounding areas.  They’re brilliant for:

• Nervous or rescue dogs who need the world in bite-sized chunks.

• Puppies still learning the ropes (and sometimes their own legs).

• Older dogs who’d rather have sniffathon than a sprint.

• And, yes, the divas — the ones who know they’re the main character.

On a solo, everything is shaped around your dog. No pack pressure, no forced hellos, no need to keep up with the spaniel. Just calm, steady walking at their pace. We’re not here to rush them — we’re here to help them grow in confidence.

And here’s the expert bit: with the right introductions, many of those “definitely solo only” dogs actually end up thriving on group dog walks. The difference is how we do it.

Our Expert Approach:

We work in pairs, on-lead, in our private field (no distractions, no surprises). We walk parallel, plenty of space between, gradually closing the gap as confidence builds. We don’t just throw dogs together and hope for the best — it’s a careful process, based on body language, timing, and trust. Only when a dog is truly ready do they move closer, until eventually they’re trotting side by side.

๐Ÿพ A Success Story๐Ÿพ

Take one tiny dachshund with a bark that could raise the dead. His owner already had a dog walker who'd been doing solo walks with him, convinced he was “aggressive” around other dogs. But what was really happening? He’d learned: bark = get picked up. He wasn’t aggressive, he was anxious.

With gentle introductions, structure, and consistency, we showed him the world wasn’t so scary. Step by step, his confidence grew. And now? He’s walking happily alongside his new pals, tail wagging, much calmer, and — best of all — his owner can finally relax knowing he’s coping brilliantly.

At Muddy Paws Adventures, we don’t do “just a walk.” Every dog is different, and we know exactly how to adapt to their needs — whether that’s solo support, careful introductions, or the right gang of mates once they’re ready.

It’s not about forcing dogs into situations. It’s about setting them (and you) up for success. And we’ve done it time and time again.
